Vinicunca is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Cusco. This multicolored mountain is located 100 km (62 miles) southwest of Cusco city, in the Pitumarca district. Vinicunca is part of the Vilcanota Mountain Range, one of eastern sections of the Andes Mountains. Most tours to Vinicunca start at Cusipata town, a small Andean village. The fame of Vinicunca began in 2016, when dedicated tours to the mountain began to be offered. Originally, Vinicunca was only visited during the Ausangate Mountain Trek, a trekking route of 5 days. However, nowadays Vinicunca can be visited in just one day.
Vinicunca has an altitude of 5,200 meters (17,060 feet) above sea level. Due to the high altitude of the trek, it is recommended to spend some days in Cusco city before attempting the trek. Our tour begins when we pick you up from your hotel in Cusco city around 4:30 am. Afterwards, we will board our private vehicle to travel to Cusipata town. Once we arrive there, we will have a light breakfast before starting our short trek to Vinicunca.
We will be trekking through the Red Valley, an area famous for its numerous reddish mountains and hills. Some multicolored mountains similar to Vinicunca can be spotted along the route. The unusual colors of the area’s mountains are the result of millions of years of mineral accumulation.
After trekking for around 2 hours, we will finally arrive at Vinicunca. You will have time to enjoy the incredible natural scenery that surrounds this place. Also, our tour guide will explain to you the cultural importance Vinicunca has for the local population.
After spending some time near Vinicunca, we will walk back to Cusipata. Once we arrive there, we will have lunch. Finally, we will board our private vehicle to return to Cusco city, where we will be arriving around 6:00 pm.
