Tour Details

The Maras Salt Mines (Salineras de Maras) are located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas in Peru, are a network of over 3000 small salt evaporation ponds, which have been used to harvest salt since pre-Inca times. The salt is mined from an underground spring, which is believed to have been formed by an ancient lake.

The pools are connected by a series of stone channels, which allow the salty water to flow from one pool to the next. The salt ponds are filled with water, heated by the sun, and the salt is left to evaporate, leaving behind a pink crystalline product. The salt is then collected, dried, and sold at local markets. The Maras Salt Mines are a beautiful and unique sight, and are a popular tourist attraction.

On the other hand, the Moray Inca Ruins are an archaeological site located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, in Peru. The site is composed of several large circular terraces carved into the earth, believed to have been used as an agricultural laboratory by the Incas.

The terraces, which are up to 30 meters deep and over 150 meters in diameter, feature intricate drainage systems and irrigation canals, as well as a variety of different crops planted in the terraces. Moray was likely used by the Incas to experiment with different crops, soil, and climates to find the best conditions for growing food. The site is believed to have been in use from the late 13th century until the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire in the 1530s.

Maras is known for its salt pans, or salineras, which are terraced pools of salt water fed from a natural spring in the mountainside. The salt pans have been in use since pre-Inca times and are still used today to produce salt for local consumption. The town is also home to a picturesque colonial church. Maras is a popular tourist destination for those seeking a taste of rural Andean life.

After exploring Maras, we will visit Moray. Moray is an archaeological site located in the Sacred Valley of Cusco. It consists of an Incan agricultural laboratory consisting of three circular terraces with different microclimates, which were used by the Incas to study the effects of different climatic conditions on various crops. The site is estimated to have been built around the year 1500 and is a popular tourist destination.
