Machu Picchu is one of the most visited places in Peru. This ancient Inca citadel was built during the XV century. According to some historians, Machu Picchu served as a royal residence for the Inca Emperor Pachacutec. The citadel is located on a hill between the Huchuy Picchu and Huayna Picchu mountains.
The citadel was abandoned in the XVI century after the fall of the Inca Empire. It was not until 1911 when Machu Picchu was rediscovered by an American expedition led by Hiram Bingham. Since then, Machu Picchu has become a major tourist attraction in Peru. Additionally, Machu Picchu was declared as a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1983.
Machu Picchu stands out for its almost intact stone buildings, which display the classic Inca architecture style. The temple of the Sun is among the most distinctive buildings of Machu Picchu. This temple is the only circular structure of the citadel and it looks like a medieval tower.
