Machu Picchu is one of the most famous places to visit in Peru. According to some archeologists, Machu Picchu was built in the XV century, and it probably was a religious sanctuary. Due to its remote location, it was inhabited by a small population of Inca priests and priestesses.
The Inca Trail was the route that connected Machu Picchu with the rest of the Inca Empire. The entrance to the citadel was reserved to the highest Inca nobles, such as the emperor and the royal family. Going to Machu Picchu was considered a sacred pilgrimage during the times of the Inca Empire.
The citadel of Machu Picchu is divided into three main sectors. The first and the second one are known as the lower and higher neighborhoods. These sections feature stone buildings located among terraces and water canals. The third sector comprises agricultural terraces that were used to grow crops to feed the local inhabitants.
Machu Picchu was declared a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1983. Since then, this ancient Inca citadel receives thousands of visitors each day. Our 2-day tour to Machu Picchu is the perfect way to visit this wonderful Inca site. Unlike a full day tour, the 2 day tour allows visitors to explore Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu at a slower pace.
