Visiting Humantay Lake is one of the most sought after day trips from Cusco. Humantay Lake is located at 4,200 meters (13,779 feet) above sea level, near the Salkantay Mountain. Humantay is considered as one of the most beautiful lakes in the region of Cusco. The lake is easily recognizable due to its unusual turquoise waters, which contrast with the white color of the nearby glaciers.
The full day tour to Humantay begins at Soraypampa town, a small Andean village. Getting to Humantay is quite challenging due to the altitude of the route. Also, the route has an approximate length of 2 km, so you will need to have a good physical condition before attempting this tour.
Even though the most popular route to Humantay is the full day tour, the lake can also be visited as part of the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu, a longer trekking route of 5 days. Also, in order to avoid suffering from altitude sickness, it is recommended to spend some days in Cusco city to acclimate to the Andean environment.
