Choquequirao is an Inca  archaeological site located in the Vilcabamba mountain range of Peru. It is located at 3,500 meters (11,482 feet)  above sea level and is one of the most remote archaeological sites in Cusco. The site is composed of a series of terraces, plazas, and temples that were built in the 15th century by the Incas. Choquequirao is a Quechua expression that translates to “cradle of gold”.

The site is surrounded by lush vegetation and is an ideal spot for trekking in Peru. Visitors can explore the terraces, plazas, and other structures that make up the site. Choquequirao is one of the last remaining citadels of the Inca Empire that has yet to be fully studied.

Itinerary

Day 1Cusco - Capuliyoc - Chiquisca - Playa Rosalina

Our adventure begins when we pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at 4:00 am. Then, we will board our private vehicle to the trailhead to Choquequirao, which is located at Capuliyoc town.

Once we arrive at Capuliyoc, we will hike to Chiquisqa town, where we will stop to have lunch. Then, we will hike to our campsite located at Playa Rosalina. We will stop there to set up our tents, have dinner, and spend the rest of the night.

Day 2Playa Rosalina - Santa Rosa - Marampata - Choquequirao

We will leave Playa Rosalina early in the morning after having breakfast. Then, we will walk to Santa Rosa town. After spending some time at Santa Rosa, we will trek to Marampata town, where we will stop to have lunch.

Afterwards, we will hike for around 2 hours to our campsite located near the archaeological site of Choquequirao. We will set up our tents, have dinner, and spend the rest of the night there.

Day 3Choquequirao

We will leave our campsite after having breakfast. Then, we will visit the incredible Inca citadel of Choquequirao.

Choquequirao is an Inca archaeological site located high in the Andes Mountains of Peru. It is situated at the top of a steep mountain ridge.The site is made up of a vast complex of terraces, stairways, plazas, and buildings, all of which are connected by an intricate network of stone stairways. The structures are made of carefully crafted stone blocks.

The main plaza of Choquequirao is the most impressive, with its grand stairway leading up to a large platform where ceremonies and rituals were held. Other structures include storehouses, temples, and residential areas. Choquequirao is an incredible example of the Inca’s engineering and architectural skill, and is an important reminder of the Inca’s legacy.

After exploring Choquequirao, we will return to our campsite. We will spend the rest of the afternoon there relaxing. Before going to sleep, we will have a delicious dinner.

Day 4Choquequirao - Marampata - Santa Rosa - Chiquisca

After having breakfast, we will leave our campsite. Then, we will start our return trip. First, we will hike to Marampata town, and then to Santa Rosa town. Afterwards, we will stop near the Apurimac river banks to have lunch.

Then, we will hike to Chiquisca town. We will stop there to set up our tents, have dinner and spend the rest of the night.

Day 5Chiquisca - Capuliyoc - Cusco

We will leave our campsite at Chiquisca after having breakfast. Then, we will ascend to the Capuliyoc mountain pass. After crossing Capuliyoc, we will stop at a viewpoint near the Apurimac Canyon to appreciate the incredible natural beauty of the place.

After leaving the viewpoint, we will stop to have lunch. Finally, we will board our private vehicle to return to Cusco city. We will be arriving there around 9:00 pm.
